Oscar Pet Foods

Case Study

Sue Watkins – Glastonbury

My voluntary work for Greyhound rescue set the scene for my future, although working on the front desk at the local police station taught me all I needed to know about dealing with people. I wanted to bring a better balance to my life, and having five dogs, all in need of love and attention, led me to Oscar and the idea of working for myself.

Searching the web site strengthened my desire to become self-employed and by learning from other people’s experiences confirmed that it was now time to be my own boss. Oscar’s quality products helped make up my mind and I intend to involve my family of pets to promote the business, especially when it comes to displaying prime examples of a good diet.

Kevin  & Stephanie Darnell – Swansea

After fifteen years of working in a factory environment I was ready for a change, and self-employment through franchising seemed to be the best way forward. I knew very little about franchising and therefore searched the Internet and the British Franchise Exhibition at the NEC before making any decisions. With so many opportunities to look at I found myself drawn to the family-orientated situation at Oscar, and having two cats also provided a link. My wife helps me on a part-time basis and our aim is to be successful and happy.

Paul Reilly joined Oscar determined to make it work. He knew it was not going to be a piece of cake starting a new business in a new area but he was prepared to work hard.

“From Glasgow to Southport to Oscar - major life-changing experiences re-established my decision to work for myself. A taste of self-employment, with partners, in a previous life confirmed that franchising was now my best option. To be part of a recognised national company that would allow me to work for myself and have my own freedom of choice was the ideal route to explore.

“My experiences of self-employment in the motor trade and dry cleaning services opened various windows of opportunity when searching for a franchise business. The franchise website gave me a very good introduction to my main interest but I was completely put off the scent when discovering Oscar and pets. Here was a proven product that offered a supportive and caring service with repeat business.

“I am now almost a year into my business with time to reflect back to the start which saw me with a blank sheet of paper and not one single customer. With Oscar Head Office supporting me I went out morning, noon and night, knocking on doors and making contact with pet owners. Within six months I had established 179 customers – I had a good product, which has proved itself time and time again. While satisfying a number of healthy pets I’ve had great success in helping dogs with tummy and skin problems. To have a vet call me to help a dog with a long-term problem and then solve it, saving the client ongoing vet bills, gave me just the boost I needed to confirm that, at last, I was running a business that brought me more rewards than just earning a living.

“I believe that the best way to achieve success and reach a good standard of living is to enjoy your work!”
